Word of the Day: Whippet (for Amelia Bedelia)

Sometimes, Jenn And The City refers to whippets. For our non-dog speaking readers, I'll attempt to describe a whippet.

Whip-pet: any of a breed of small swift slender dogs used for coursing small game and racing

That's according to Mr. Webster. Very unsatisfactory, really. I must speak to those people. To Do List #3,428.67 - write letter to Merriam-Webster on-line. Right.

Let us try the American Whippet Club breed standard.

Whippet:
A medium size sighthound giving the appearance of elegance and fitness, denoting great speed, power and balance without coarseness.
Well, yes.

That's true.

I think maybe a JATC description might be in order.

Whippet:
Dog resembling a small greyhound, unable to resist anything soft and fuzzy.

Particularly if it moves:

(No worries, that's not a real "bunny")

Capable of bursts of energy,

and highly successful counter raids.

But their best skill......

Anytime, anywhere....

is sleeping.

(hope that answers your question, Amy.)

I just happened upon your blog and will add it to favorites. I too have a whippet. Your pictures are great and the characterization of their habits right on the money. Charley does all those things. Why do we even fight it? Toilet paper is for shredding, and anything on the counter is fair game. My previous whippet Gracie's favorite napping spot was under the mattress pad of my made bed. You couldn't even see a bump. I never knew how she could get under there without wrinkling the covers.I'll be back.

I had to laugh to see your comment on my blog. Not to make excuses, but: I do not regularly blog. duh,eh? I teach computer classes at the loal senior center and occasionally demo Blogger.
My second chuckle was about leaving Charley unsupervised. At 17 mos, he can be trusted to eat makeup brushes, etc. He has stopped eating cell phones. We went through three in the past year, stealing them from my purse. But I still keep my shoes on the mantel.
We are in Flushing, MI, northwest of Flint.
